Iyabo Obasanjo Writes Open Letter To Boko Haram (READ)

Dear Boko Haram
“The fact that you have taken arms against the Nigerian state is no surprise. The question should be why haven’t more young people organised themselves against the state?
“Even the fact that your motto, ‘Against Western Education’ is in a way reasonable given the fact that your leader, martyred by the Nigerian state had university education and found no reasonable employment but had to resort to thuggery for politicians to survive, as the story goes.
“He, like millions of Nigerian young people and college graduates, seeing a blighted future are doing anything to survive.

20 YEAR GIRL SENTENCED TO MASS RAPE AS PUNISHMENT

A 20-year-old Indian woman has been left fighting for her life after village elders allegedly ordered her to be gang-raped – because she had fallen in love with the man outside her community. Thirteen men have been arrested in connection with this case.
A Kangaroo court, locally called ‘Salishi Sabha’, allegedly ordered the rape as punishment for the woman because she couldn’t pay a £244 fine for her ‘love’ crime – falling in love with a man outside her community.

The victim further told the police that she “had lost count” of the number of men who assaulted her throughout Tuesday night, in Sabalpur village.
According to her words, the Salishi Sabha summoned her and her lover to their court on Monday and detained them throughout the day and night. Then both, the victim and her man, were tied to separate trees in the village square as the court issued the order.
Their affair cost them a £244 fine each. However, when the girl’s family admitted they were unable to pay the fine, the head of Salishi Sabha allegedly ordered the young girl be raped as additional punishment.
The boy’s friend managed to pay his fine on his behalf.
The victim is now being treated in the local hospital and the police are waiting for the medical report to be issued.
While the police have already arrested 13 persons one is still on the run.

Our fighters immediately set up a roadblock and succeeded in capturing them. They were then able to detain other members of the cell.ow//
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights posted a photograph of the two prisoners being crucified at the roundabout.
Passers-by appear to be walking past the two men apparently unfazed.
One of the men is pictured with a banner wrapped round his body which reads: ‘This man fought against Muslims and threw  a grenade in this place.’

Actress Laide Bakare Shaves Off EFCC Rumour, Storms Lagos Party

This report was sent in by her publicist.
It may not be possible to rewrite the facts of what one experienced and went through. But it is possible to rewrite the way one perceives it and handle it from the current state onward. The fact remains that; one can redesign his or her life. Though, it may seem impossible physically, but mentally, it is very possible.
Seasoned Nollywood actress, Laide Bakare, is not weighed down by the emotional pain from stories flying around recently about her home. She is into new experiences, moving on and grasping the moment squarely and moving ahead. Continue after the cut.

Contrary to the rumour of being under fear, on Sunday, 27th of April, 2014, Laide stepped out boldly with other dignitaries for the book launch and anniversary of a top member of the movie Industry, Yinka Quadri, which held in Lagos.
She was spotted chatting freely with her colleagues before she stormed the stage to appreciate an Islamic singer, Ahmed Alawiye, with a few Naira notes.
Recall, there were stories about two weeks back regarding a business gone sour between her husband and a telecoms giant, MTN, which, rightly or wrongly,  necessitated him being declared wanted by the EFCC.

But for beautiful Laide, that experience will remain history; the EFCC blackmail will not be allowed to haunt both her life and dreams. She has refused to be stuck in the past.

Nigeria’s Debt Rises To N10.16tn -DMO

wpid-Okonjo1-360x270.jpeg
According to data released by the Debt Management Office on Wednesday, Nigeria’s debt rose from N7.53tn in March 2013 to N10.162tn as of March 31, 2014.
Punch reports more on this below:
The nation’s total debt stock rose by N2.63tn ($16.84bn) from N7.53tn ($48.36bn) in March 2013 to N10.162tn ($65.2bn) as of March 31, 2014, indicating a 34.93 per cent rise within a period of one year, data released by the Debt Management Office on Wednesday showed.
From December 2013 to March 31, 2014, the country’s total debt stock rose by over N120bn from N10.04tn to N10.162tn, according to the latest statistics.
The statistics showed that the domestic debt component of the Federal Government alone stood at N7.18tn ($46.12bn) as of March 31, 2014.
Going by the rebased Gross Domestic Product of $510bn, this means that the debt to GDP ratio of the country stands at 12.79 per cent.
The DMO statistics also showed that the external debt of both the states and the Federal Government stood at $9.17bn or N1.43tn.
The domestic debt stock of the states, on the other hand, stood at N1.55tn or $9.96bn. This was as of December 31, 2012.
Over a one-year period, the total debt increased by 34.93 per cent as it stood at N7.53tn or $48.36bn as of March 31, 2013.
FGN Bonds accounted for 57.52 per cent of the Federal Government’s domestic debt at N4.13tn. The Nigerian Treasury Bills accounted for N2.74bn or 38.09 per cent, while the Nigerian Treasury Bonds accounted for N315.39bn or 4.39 per cent.
The growth of the nation’s debt stock can be seen in the budget for debt servicing. The Federal Government plans to spend N2.08tn servicing the country’s debt in the next three years.
The figures for debt servicing as well as the county’s debt stock are contained in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper of the Federal Government.
The document stated that while N591.76bn was utilised in servicing the nation’s debt in 2013, the sums of N712bn, N684bn and N684bn would be used for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 fiscal periods, respectively.
The total amount for domestic debt servicing as of the end of December 2012 stood at N720.55bn, indicating an increase of 34.08 per cent over the level in 2011.
The total domestic debt service of the Federal Government as a percentage of the total domestic debt stock outstanding was 11.02 per cent in 2012, which was higher than the 9.56 per cent recorded in 2011.
Given the recent rebasing of the country’s GDP, which saw it rising to about $510bn, the debt to GDP ratio has significantly gone down.
However, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okono-Iweala, explained that the low debt to GDP ratio did not mean that the Federal Government would now go on a borrowing spree.
The statistics released by the DMO did not include the breakdown of the external debt status of each of the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
However, the statistics published by the office in January showed that among the states, four with external debt profile above $100m ranked highest. These were Lagos, with $938,135,517.81; Kaduna, $241,309,864.17; Cross River, $121,966,922.51; and Ogun, $116,802,098.95.
This means that Lagos State accounted for 33.31 per cent of the external debt of the 36 states of the federation and the FCT. It also means that the four states accounted for 50.36 per cent of the states’ total external debt.
